Translation

Having an idiomatic knowledge of the local language is essential when writing to your foreign clients.

"Translation is about recognising the faux amis, knowing when il faut que le francais prime and above all spoken English, not automated English."

Online translation tools can help with the translation of one of two words in isolation, however they are not the best way of translating a multi-page document, for example.

With a First Class Honours degree in French from the University of Bristol, I am a fluent French speaker adept at picking out the faux amis between French and English.

I also have the ear for language that allows me to know when to stick rigidly to the sense of the original text and when some degree of flexibility is allowed in translation.

Among my past translation work (French-English) is a five-month project involving the proofreading, copyediting and redrafting of some 170 investment fund documents for the Paris head office of French investment bank Société Générale.

I am keen to carry out similar French-English business translation projects in the future.

I am also able to assist any English companies seeking to enter French-speaking markets via the translation of sales and marketing materials or other corporate documentation into French.
